Welcome Back to School 2020-2021http://hid.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/148Welcome Back to School 2020-2021
Can we begin our first message of the school year with great big "Thank you's"!

Thank you to our students who are adjusting in a rather amazing way to all of the new routines in place for Covid_19.

Thank you to our parents, guardians, care-givers who despite their worries, are understanding about mask-wearing, dropping off their students at the front of the school and not being allowed into the back yard or our school building, and being positive and supportive about these changes in the time of Covid_19.

Thank you to our staff who frankly, have gone above and beyond to implement all of then new protection strategies needed for teaching and learning safely in the time of Covid_19.

The common theme here is change and adjusting to change. And we are all doing it and giving each other grace and understanding as we do so. THANK YOU!

On Tuesday, September 8 we welcomed students with surnames A-G; on Wednesday September 9 we welcomed students with surnames H-O, and on Thursday, September 10 we will welcome students with surnames P-Z AND all of our JK students. JK parents please remember that the start of the school day for ALL of our JKs is 9:35 am. Please go to the Kindergarten yard on the west side of the school and wait with your child, in a socially distanced way, outside of the fenced-in yard. We will have extra staff available to assist your child to enter the classroom on this first, special day of school for them and for you! We can't wait to meet our newest members of the Hillsdale school community.

There are two items to share with you at this time:

1. We are communicating to parents / guardians via email this school year. If you have not received the back-to-school communication (2 emails), please call the office with an up-to-date email address or to correct any error we might have in your email address.

2. We will be implementing "Boomerang" lunches next week on Monday, September 14. A boomerang lunch is a fancy way of saying that anything that comes to school in your child's lunch bag returns home in your child's lunch bag.

FINALLY, there will be bumps along the way, our staff and our parents and our students have a lot to contend with. We know we are all doing our best.

Thanks to two!http://hid.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/147Thanks to two!
Our School Council Chair, Roz L, has been honoured with a SCDSB Character Award. Thank you Roz for all you do to support our school with your ideas and enthusiasm. You always have our students' and families' best interests in mind and at heart. Check out the video to see the names of all those being honoured across our system in three categories - Students, Staff, Volunteers - on twitter @SCDSB_Schools

Thank you also to the MacLachlan family who have tidied up our school garden for us while we are away from school. What a great way to care for our school and learn about the growing season at the same time. Much appreciated.

National Volunteers Weekhttp://hid.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/146National Volunteers Week
Dear Hillsdale Families

This week is National Volunteer Week in Canada. So many of our parents and other community members volunteer in our school and have done this year-after-year at our school. We appreciate all that our volunteers do in our school for us and for our students. Our School Council works tirelessly to organize special activities for our school.

Here is an activity you might consider doing to thank our school volunteers, and really, all who volunteer in y/our community: "During NVW we want Canadians to celebrate all volunteers by printing out, personalizing and decorating their windows with Volunteer Canada’s clapping hands image". You can find this image at this website: https://volunteer.ca/nvw2020

And thanks to all of our parents who are working so hard to continue their children's learning through distance learning. We clap for your hard work as well! Mrs. Clark

Lots of Fun at School this Week!http://hid.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/145Lots of Fun at School this Week!
Just a little update on the fun our students have been having this week.

The Barrie Colts Assembly with Charlie Horse (thanks Mr. Hache) was held Tuesday morning! Charlie greeted students at the door and players answered students' questions about the life of an OHL hockey player. You can still purchase tickets to attend the Colts game in the Hillsdale section on Saturday, March 21st. Our "Colts Choir" is practicing O Canada and will sing on the ice before the game! Due date to purchase tickets is March 6 - send your form in with your student tomorrow March 5, or drop it off on the PA Day March 6.

Tuesday afternoon students in Grades 4-8 saw an excellent production of "Straight On Till Morning" a play that depicted positive mental health in a sensitive way. The acting and singing were amazing. The production by Education Arts Canada is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Today, Wednesday, students in Grades 1-5 are playing in-door golf courtesy of an instructor from Orr Lake Golf Course.

Thanks to School Council for organizing the Colts game for Hillsdale families and supporting the in-school performance.

We have had some questions about Grad Pics Re-take Day for our Gr. 8s and SKs and it will be April 21st.

Have a great weekend Hillsdale School Community!
